We organise outdoor educational trips for disadvantaged children and families who would otherwise be unable to afford such experiences.
Our first Destination was to Wendover Woods (including the Gruffalo Trail).
🌳 Thriving in Nature Trips & Outdoor Experiences🌲 Family Nature Trip, Wendover Woods (9 November 2025)

Wendover Woods Trip
Families explored woodland trails, enjoyed outdoor play, and experienced the countryside together many for the very first time. The visit supported physical activity, confidence, and family wellbeing through shared time in nature.
As part of our Thriving in Nature programme, Sunrise Multicultural Project organised a special family visit to Wendover Woods on 9 November 2025, welcoming 42 participants for a day of exploration, relaxation, and shared outdoor experiences.
For many of the families attending, particularly those living in Banbury’s most deprived wards or in temporary accommodation, this was their first opportunity to visit a woodland environment or spend extended time in the countryside.
🌿 What Families Experienced
The day was designed to be informal, inclusive, and accessible to all ages and abilities. Activities included:
- Guided woodland walks through the Chiltern forest landscape
- Free outdoor play in natural adventure areas
- Wildlife spotting and sensory nature exploration
- Time for families to picnic, relax, and socialise together
- Opportunities for children to build confidence through outdoor movement and discovery
- Children were able to run, climb, explore, and play freely, experiences that are often limited in urban settings or temporary housing.
🍂 Trip Highlights

👉 What families said:
“Thank you so much Sunrise, we need more trips like this!”

đź’š Why Trips Like This Matter
Access to nature is not equal. Many of the families we support face barriers including:
- Limited transport to reach rural green spaces
- Financial constraints preventing leisure travel
- Lack of familiarity or confidence accessing countryside environments
- Overcrowded housing with little safe outdoor play space
Providing supported trips helps remove these barriers and ensures that everyone can benefit from time outdoors.
Outdoor experiences like this are widely recognised to:
- Improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety
- Encourage physical activity in a natural, enjoyable way
- Strengthen family relationships through shared experiences
- Build children’s confidence, curiosity and resilience
- Reduce feelings of isolation by creating positive social connections
- Foster a sense of belonging to the wider community and environment
For refugee and newly arrived families especially, these trips can be an important step in rebuilding wellbeing and creating positive memories after periods of uncertainty or displacement.
đź’¬ What Participants Said:
“The children loved being outside all day. We don’t usually get to go somewhere like this.”
“It was peaceful, fresh, and a chance to forget our worries.”

🌍 A Lasting Impact
The Wendover Woods trip was more than a day out, it was an opportunity to:
- Introduce families to environments they may not otherwise access
- Build confidence to visit green spaces independently in future
- Encourage healthier, more active lifestyles
- Strengthen trust, friendships, and community cohesion
Experiences like these are a vital part of Thriving in Nature, helping ensure that access to the well-being benefits of the natural world is not limited by income, background, or circumstance.
Upcoming trips
These trips promote:
