Sunrise Multicultural Project

Bringing Communities Together Through Nature, Creativity and Wellbeing

Sunrise Multicultural Project is delighted to celebrate the successful first year of our Thriving in Nature programme, an inspiring community initiative bringing people together through outdoor activities, gardening, creativity and shared experiences in nature.

Delivered in partnership with Bridge Street Community Garden and generously funded by Oxfordshire Community Foundation (OCF), the project has provided welcoming and inclusive opportunities for individuals and families from diverse backgrounds across Banbury to enjoy the benefits of connecting with nature.

We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved so far and excited to build on this success as we begin the second year of the programme.

A Year of Growth, Friendship and Community Connections

Throughout its first year, Thriving in Nature has brought people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds together to enjoy activities that promote wellbeing, confidence, creativity and social inclusion.

We successfully delivered 12 nature-based workshops, recording 272 attendances across the programme.

From gardening and growing activities to nature-inspired arts and crafts, environmental learning and gentle wellbeing sessions, participants have enjoyed opportunities to learn new skills, make friends and discover the positive benefits of spending time outdoors.

Our activities have included:

  • Gardening, planting and growing activities
  • Nature-inspired arts and crafts
  • Creating bug hotels and learning about local wildlife
  • Creative wellbeing and mindfulness workshops
  • Outdoor learning and sensory activities for children
  • Gentle movement and wellbeing activities
  • Opportunities to connect with others through shared experiences

Each session has provided much more than an opportunity to enjoy nature. It has helped create a welcoming space where people can feel connected, supported and part of their community.

The Power of Nature to Improve Wellbeing

At Sunrise, we recognise that access to green spaces and opportunities to spend time outdoors can make a real difference to people’s wellbeing.

For individuals and families experiencing social isolation, language barriers or other challenges, taking part in friendly, accessible community activities can help build confidence, create new friendships and provide a sense of belonging.

Thriving in Nature has encouraged participants to relax, express their creativity, learn practical skills and enjoy spending time together in a supportive environment.

The programme has also helped families and children develop greater awareness of the natural world, encouraging an interest in wildlife, biodiversity and caring for our local environment.

Launching Year Two

A Wonderful Community Celebration!

Following the success of our first year, we were delighted to launch Year Two of Thriving in Nature on Saturday 3 October 2026 at Bridge Street Community Garden, alongside Banbury’s Canal Day celebrations.

It was a fantastic start to the new programme year, with over 100 visitors joining us for a wonderful day of creativity, music and community spirit.

Visitors enjoyed a range of activities, including:

  • Autumn-inspired wreath-making
  • Creative watercolour painting
  • Live music and entertainment
  • Opportunities to meet new people and enjoy the garden

The event brought together individuals and families from different backgrounds, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere where everyone could take part.

It was lovely to see people enjoying themselves, trying new activities and making connections through shared creative experiences.

Working Together to Build Stronger Communities

Partnership working has been central to the success of Thriving in Nature.

Our collaboration with Bridge Street Community Garden has created opportunities for local residents to explore and enjoy green spaces while taking part in meaningful community activities.

We are also extremely grateful to Oxfordshire Community Foundation for its generous funding and support, which has enabled Sunrise to provide free, inclusive activities for people who may otherwise face barriers to accessing outdoor and wellbeing opportunities.

Through this partnership, we are helping to:

  • Reduce social isolation and encourage new friendships
  • Improve wellbeing and confidence
  • Increase access to green spaces
  • Promote environmental awareness and sustainability
  • Bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together
  • Create opportunities for learning, creativity and community involvement

These achievements reflect Sunrise’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusion, wellbeing and stronger community connections across Banbury.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Oxfordshire Community Foundation for supporting this valuable programme.

A special thank you also goes to our wonderful partners at Bridge Street Community Garden, whose dedication, knowledge and support have helped make these activities possible.

We are equally grateful to our staff, volunteers, activity leaders and everyone who has contributed to delivering the workshops.

Most importantly, thank you to all the individuals and families who have participated, shared their creativity and helped make each session such a positive experience.

Your enthusiasm and involvement are what make this programme truly special.

Looking Ahead – Growing Together in Year Two

As we begin our second year, we look forward to continuing to provide engaging and inclusive opportunities for people to connect with nature, learn new skills and strengthen community relationships.

We hope to welcome even more individuals and families to our activities, creating new experiences and lasting memories along the way.

At Sunrise, we believe that everyone should have opportunities to enjoy nature, feel included and experience the positive benefits of community connections.

Together, we are growing friendships, building confidence and creating a healthier, happier and more connected community.
