Expertise: Leadership, strategy, governance, education, youth work, organisational development and community engagement.
Background: Zahid has worked across education, leadership and community development, including delivering and managing youth clubs, enrichment programmes and community-focused projects. He has supported charities, colleges and organisations to strengthen governance, strategy, inclusion and service delivery.
Passion: Supporting people and communities to grow, thrive, and feel included – especially individuals or groups who may need additional support but are sometimes overlooked.
About Zahid Bhatti:
Zahid is passionate about community development, inclusive leadership and creating opportunities that genuinely improve people’s lives. Having grown up in Banbury, he has been involved in volunteering and community programmes similar to Sunrise’s work since primary school. As Chair, he is focused on strengthening governance, developing a strategy, working on a number of policies to support staff and build a sustainable and ambitious future while staying rooted in the community it serves.
Why I Joined Sunrise:
I joined Sunrise because I was inspired by the organisation’s commitment to supporting diverse communities and creating safe, welcoming spaces where people feel valued and supported. The work Sunrise does reflects many of the community values and programmes I grew up around in Banbury.
What Excites Me About the Future:
I’m excited about helping Sunrise continue to grow its impact, strengthen its long-term sustainability and develop services that respond to the changing needs of our community while keeping people and relationships at the centre.
Favourite Place in the Local Area:
One of my favourite spots is walking around the fields off Bankside where I spent a lot of time playing cricket in my earlier days!
One Thing People Might Not Know About Me Is:
I’ve been participating in and volunteering with community and youth programmes in Banbury since Secondary School, many of which were very similar to the work Sunrise now delivers.
What Stands Out to You Most About Sunrise Multicultural Project?
The genuine care, dedication, and commitment of the staff, volunteers and community members. There is a real sense that people want to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Hidden Talent:
Turning big ideas and discussions into practical plans and actions that people can work on together.
If You Had a Superpower to Help the Community, What Would It Be?
To help others believe in themselves and contribute to supporting others to thrive.
Tea or Coffee!?
Coffee mainly – I love finding the best coffee spots where I go!
Favourite Meal:
Honestly, it can be anything – from really good bread and butter, to a curry, to a good burger with friends or family!
