An Exciting Journey of Discovery, Teamwork and New Experiences
At Sunrise Multicultural Project, we believe that every young person deserves opportunities to explore, learn, develop confidence and discover their potential.
In April 2026, members of our Girls Youth Group enjoyed an exciting day of adventure as part of the Getaway programme, delivered in partnership with Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership (OxCRP).
The girls travelled from Banbury to Reading, taking part in valuable travel training before enjoying an action-packed paintballing experience.
It was a fantastic opportunity to develop independence, strengthen friendships, build confidence and create wonderful memories together.
Learning to Travel with Confidence
For many young people, travelling independently can feel challenging, particularly when using unfamiliar public transport routes.
The Getaway programme provided a safe and supportive opportunity for our girls to develop important practical skills and gain greater confidence navigating public transport.
Throughout their journey, the girls took an active role in:
- Planning and understanding their journey
- Navigating railway stations
- Finding the correct platforms and trains
- Using trains and buses
- Developing awareness of travel safety
- Working together and making decisions
- Building confidence in unfamiliar environments
With guidance and encouragement, the girls were able to take greater responsibility for their journey, developing skills that will be valuable throughout their lives.

An Action-Packed Paintballing Adventure!
After successfully navigating their journey, the girls enjoyed an exciting paintballing session.
The activity provided a fantastic opportunity to develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving and confidence while having plenty of fun!
Working together, encouraging one another and taking on new challenges helped the girls strengthen their friendships and discover their own abilities.
The experience was about much more than simply enjoying a day out. It encouraged the young people to step outside their comfort zones, try something different and develop greater belief in themselves.

Empowering Young People Through New Experiences
At Sunrise, supporting young people’s personal development, confidence and wellbeing is an important part of our work.
Opportunities like the Getaway programme help young people develop practical life skills while experiencing new environments and activities they might not otherwise have the chance to enjoy.
By encouraging young people to take an active role in planning and navigating journeys, the programme supports greater independence and prepares them for future opportunities in education, employment and everyday life.

It also helps strengthen friendships, build social confidence and encourage positive connections between young people.
We were particularly proud to see how confidently the girls embraced the experience, supported one another and demonstrated their growing independence throughout the day.

Creating lasting memories, building friendships and celebrating the confidence of our young people.
Working Together to Create Opportunities
The Getaway programme was led by Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership and funded by Oxfordshire County Council.
It brought together community partners, including:
- Sunrise Multicultural Project
- Banbury Mosque
- Abingdon DAMASCUS
- Abingdon Muslim Community
Across the wider programme, 74 young people and 14 supporting adults participated in six supported trips, gaining valuable travel experience and enjoying activities in different locations.
The initiative demonstrated the importance of working together to create inclusive opportunities that help young people develop confidence, independence and new skills.
A Heartfelt Thank You

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Oxfordshire Community Rail Partnership for organising and delivering this valuable programme and to Oxfordshire County Council for providing funding.
We are also grateful to our dedicated Sunrise staff and youth workers for supporting and encouraging the girls throughout their journey.
Most importantly, a huge well done to all the girls who participated!
Your enthusiasm, teamwork, courage and willingness to try new experiences made the day such a success.
We are incredibly proud of you all!
